Saltworks Stage Reading - Twelve Angry Men

This summer (2011) Saltworks did its first ever Stage Reading class. As many of you know, we were unable to produce an August Young Company show this year due to many variables in circumstances, like space and staff. So instead of a Young Company Show, Saltworks offered an exclusive opportunity to students ages 11-16 who had taken a class in the past year.

For three intense days, Aug. 22-24, Dale led 12 students through preparation for a staged reading of Twelve Angry Men. They did dramaturgy (study of history, original setting, famous performances, etc.), light plots, projection design, sound design, costume elements, etc. On Wednesday night, the group presented a staged reading of Twelve Angry Men for parents and friends.

Saltworks again participated in the
Summer Dreamers Academy

Summer Dreamers Academy provides an opportunity for students in grades K-8 in the Pittsburgh Public schools to spend 5 weeks with friends, reading great books, and participating in unique, fun activities. It is a free summer camp offered through Pittsburgh Public Schools to engage students in learning and fun during the summer months. Saltworks offered an afternoon activity that helped to make this an unforgettable experience for kids.

The Summer Dreamers Academy was designed to help campers build skills and habits to prepare them for high school and The Pittsburgh Promise. This camp increases camper achievement and interest in literacy and help students develop critical thinking and team-building skills.

COST: Free
DATES: July 11, 2011 through August 10, 2011 (Mon. - Fri.)

EXPLORING THEATRE
Facilitated By: Saltworks Theatre
Camper Capacity: 50
Location: Pittsburgh Peabody and ATA
Culminating Activity: Campers participate in a performance

Students had a ton of fun as they explored literary works and learned life skills through theater classes. Campers learned valuable study skills and confidence in front of an audience through basic acting. They learned monologues, worked in small groups to develop scenes, rehearsed and finally performed a play the last week of camp.
